How Does an Associate Fit Into Your Team?

Through 2022 and 2023, I surveyed and spoke with over 50 GPs to be better informed on hiring and developing Associates ahead of expanding the team at Dynamo. I also sounded out both current and former Associates - felt odd doing otherwise.

One of my major observations was the importance of intentionality in the hiring process. When GPs took the time and effort to outline the experiences and qualities of an ideal candidate as well as key responsibilities, they appeared to yield positive results. Related, Associates identified frustration and several described a negative sentiment of their experience when there wasn't a clear definition of success.

It's worth noting that VCs who were ex Operators seemed to have a better-developed muscle and approach to hiring. The stories of "shotgun" hiring were limited as were the number of "mis-hires."
